Latvia: Passenger transport of LDz down in 2009 by 24.6%

The state-owned railway company Latvijas dzelzceļš (LDz) carried 275,474 passengers last year. It is 24.6% less than in 2008.

Romania: PM Boc wants the high-speed line to reach Romania

During the Summit of Danubian countries, which took place on the 25th of February, the Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said, that the high-speed railway line Paris-Strasbourg-Bratislava should be extended, so it would go from Budapest to Bucharest and Constanta.

Ukraine: Ukrzaliznytsia to renovate more than 30,000 cars in 2010

Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) announced, that in 2010 it plans to renovate 30,800 cars. 1,400 cars will go through major repairs.

Latvia: LDz will organize high level CEO`s meeting

On 13-14 May in Jūrmala (Latvia) will take place the 52nd meeting of Railway Transport Council (ЦСЖТ), which will be attended by CEO`s of railway companies from the Baltic States, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other countries of 1520mm railway area, LDz informed.

Bombardier Transportation won a tender for the new regional double-deck trains organized by the French Railways (SNCF) on behalf of the French Regions.

Poland: Solaris to employ up to 600 people

Even though the market situation was not favourable, bus and tram manufacturer Solaris increased its revenues by 11% and employed some new workers in 2009. This year might be even better for the Polish producer.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) reached an agreement with the company Alstom and its partners over the axles in ICE T (411 and 415 series).

Poland: Consortium of Trakcja Polska chosen in a tender for LCS Działdowo

Polish state-owned rail infrastructure manager PKP PLK announced the winner of the tender for creation of Local Control Center (LCS) in Działdowo on E-65 railway line linking Warsaw with Gdynia.

Romania: CFR Calatori to modernize its MUs

Romanian passenger rail operator CFR Calatori plans to modernize its DMUs. The order, worth around EUR 7.2m (tax excluded), will be realized in a period of 30 months.

The Swiss company InterRail Holding AG, a member of the TransInvest Group, and Kaztransservice AG (KTS), the container company of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, are strengthening their cooperation.

On the 23rd of February, Slovenian Railways signed an agreement on business cooperation with DB Schenker Rail, the subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn responsible for cargo transport.

Kazakhstan: JSC Kaztemirtrans announced tender for purchase of rolling-stock

JSC Kaztemirtrans, the subsidiary of Kazkhstan Temir Zholy, announced a tender for purchase of rolling-stock. The company wants to buy 500 covered freight cars and 500 eight-wheel tanks with universal draining device.

Lithuania: Rail Baltica remains a priority

Lithuanian Prime Minister, Andrius Kubilius, met with the European coordinator for Rail Baltica, Pavel Telicka, who assured him, that the project remains a priority for the EU and will be continued.

Czech Republic: Czech Railways punctual in 91% in 2009

In 2009, passenger trains of Czech Railways were on time in 91.1%. According to the company’s press service, this figure is comparable to figures recorded by railways in Western Europe, such as in France or Great Britain.

Czech Republic: Strike was supposed to hit rail transport on Monday

Czech trade unions announced, that they will organize a warning strike on Monday, March 1, due to the higher tax added to the workers’ benefits. However, the strike was later canceled.
