Germany: DB to operate streetcars in England

Deutsche Bahn (DB) will further expand its services in England. The German company will take over operations of the Tyne and Wear Metro on the first of April 2010.

DB will operate the Metro with a seven-year contract, which may be further extended for another two years. Moreover, Deutsche Bahn will be also responsible for upgrading 90 trains of the company.

Deutsche Bahn already owns the Chiltern Trains passenger franchise and has 50 percent stakes in Wrexham, Shropshire & Marylebone Railway and the London Overground commuter service. It also runs Britain’s biggest rail-freight company and may bid for a stake in the U.K. arm of Channel Tunnel operator Eurostar Group Ltd, Bloomberg reports.
