Austria: Strabag consortium building Vienna Central station for EUR 220m
A consortium led by Strabag, Central and Eastern Europe’s largest construction group, has been awarded the tender to build the new Vienna Central Station from ÖBB Infrastruktur AG. Strabag’s share of the EUR 220m project amounts to about 30 %.
Construction on the new Vienna Central Station will begin before the end of November 2009, so that one section can already begin operations in 2013 and the works can be completed in 2015.
The demolition of the existing station “Südbahnhof” in early 2010 will be the first step not only towards a new through station but also for a completely new city district, including the 20,000 m² station building being built by the Strabag consortium with a glass-and-steel roof and space for about 100 shops and several restaurants. This phase of the project will also see the construction beneath the platforms of a garage for more than 600 cars as well as bicycle parking.
In a later phase, several office buildings with 550,000 m² of space will be built along the “Gürtel” ring road. A residential area with schools and parks is planned in the southern section of the site.
