Lithuania: Lietuvos geležinkeliai to receive modern telecommunication system
Trains will travel faster and safer through Lithuania. This year, the modernization of East-West transport corridor going to the port of Klaipeda and Kaliningrad will be finished.
Thanks to the EU financing (LTL 80.7m), the link received modern telecommunication system. According to the transport minister Eligijus Masiulis, implementation of the project will make the railway line faster and safer.
Moreover, the modernization will allow Lietuvos geležinkeliai to make a better use out of the current rail infrastructure. Now, more trains will travel on the line, Lithuanian Railways announced in its press statement.
The modernization process covered 145 km of railway lines. From now on, trains will be able to reach a speed of 160 km/h there. Works on the project should be finished on the 31st of December 2009.
